In addition to being the home of Illinois Tennis, the Atkins Tennis Center is open to all members of the Urbana - Champaign community and visitors to the area.

In 2013 the University of Illinois and the Atkins Tennis Center hosted the 2013 NCAA Division I Women's and Men's Tennis Championships. It was the first time a Midwest school has hosted the NCAA Tournament since the women's and men's championships were combined in 2005. Atkins also hosts a number of elite junior tournaments and one of the longest running professional tournaments on the USTA Pro Circuit: the JSM Challenger.

During the summer months, the center is also host to the Fighting Illini Tennis Camps and Nike Tennis Camps. Adults and juniors from around the country travel to central Illinois to learn from Illinois coaches Evan Clark (Nike) and Brad Dancer (F.I.T.) Campers experience a thorough training regimen that covers stroke technique, match strategy, and conditioning and fitness training. Junior campers receive approximately 35 hours of on-court training over five days while adult campers receive 20 hours of instruction over a weekend.
